Area1 HAGI

Hagi is located in a sheltered deltaic embayment on the Sea of Japan coastline in Yamaguchi Prefecture, at the western end of the island of Honshu. Historically, Hagi was the political centre for the Hagi (Choshu) clan and prospered under the rule of the feudal lords, the Mori family, for two and a half centuries. Political changes in the Meiji era left Hagi without major development over the subsequent 150 years, so the Castle Town and the industrial sites survive intact without the massive industrialization that has changed the landscapes of many of the other component parts of the nomination.
