Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the inscription of “Site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining” on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Since its establishment in September 2013, National Congress of Industrial Heritage has worked tirelessly alongside local businesses, organizations, and individuals to achieve the inscription of this heritage on the UNESCO World Heritage List, ensure the preservation of its 23 component sites across 8 prefectures and 11 cities for future generations, and promote regional and tourism development through the utilization of these heritage sites.
Thanks to your continuous support, we achieved UNESCO World Heritage designation in July 2015, and this year marks the 10th anniversary. Interest and expectations among the public, including the 11 cities across 8 prefectures, have grown significantly.
We extend our gratitude to Honorary Chairman Takashi Imai, former Representative Director Hiroshi Yasuda, and all related government agencies, local governments, and many others who contributed their efforts during this period.
The inscription of “Site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution” on the UNESCO World Heritage List recognizes its historical value in demonstrating how Japan achieved industrialization in an extremely short period by adapting advanced Western science and technology to domestic demand and social traditions.
In addition to being a “serial nomination” encompassing 23 properties across 8 prefectures and 11 cities, it overcame numerous challenges to achieve World Heritage inscription, including the inclusion of component assets that remain in active operation. Japan achieved industrial modernization in just half a century, starting tentatively in the final years of the feudal system, and became one of the world's leading nations.
However, present-day Japan is struggling to escape from three decades of low growth following the collapse of the bubble economy. Japan's GDP fell from second to third place globally in 2010 when overtaken by China, dropped to fourth place the year before last when surpassed by Germany, and is predicted to be overtaken by India in the near future.
To overcome this economic stagnation, we must learn from the achievements of our predecessors who accomplished modernization in the half-century from the late Edo period to the Meiji era, reclaim that spirit as Japanese people, and revitalize our industries.
We, National Congress of Industrial Heritage will work in collaboration with the government, local governments, private companies, organizations, and overseas expert institutions to ensure that the value of “Site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution” continues to grow and is firmly passed on to future generations.
We continue to ask for your support and cooperation.
Best regards,
Susumu Ishihara
